The Christmas Boat Parade Reaches Each Part of Newport Harbor on Its Own Clock

Every parade listing gives the same time, 6:30 p.m. That is when the lead boat leaves the Tip of Lido Isle. At Lido Marina Village, just across the water, the first boats aren't scheduled to arrive until about 8:50.

The 118th Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade runs Wednesday through Sunday, December 16 to 20, 2026. As usual, the Commodores Club of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce is hosting. The route starts and ends at the Tip of Lido Isle, so the parade is one long loop around the harbor. Planning a parade night comes down to two questions: where in that loop you'll be standing, and which of the five weeks of harbor lights around it you want to see.

A loop of up to three hours, so your spot sets the time

Davey's Locker and Newport Landing, two harbor cruise operators, publish a 2026 route schedule with estimated times at 38 points along the course. Grouped by part of the harbor, the times show how far apart the first and last viewing spots really are.

Part of the harbor Point on the route Estimated pass time
Lido Isle Tip of Lido Isle, start 6:30 p.m.
Lido Isle Lido Isle Yacht Club 6:34 p.m.
Lido Isle Lido Isle Bridge 6:42 p.m.
West Peninsula Marina Park 6:49 p.m.
West Peninsula 15th Street Beach 7:00 p.m.
Central harbor Newport Harbor Yacht Club 7:07 p.m.
Central harbor Bay Island Bridge 7:09 p.m.

Central harbor Davey's Locker 7:16 p.m.
Harbor entrance Peninsula Point Beach 7:29 p.m.
Harbor entrance Pirate's Cove 7:32 p.m.
Balboa Island Balboa Island Bridge, first pass 7:43 p.m.
Balboa Island Balboa Island Ferry Landing 7:58 p.m.
Balboa Island Balboa Island Bayfront 8:05 p.m.
Balboa Island Balboa Island Bridge, second pass 8:10 p.m.
Upper harbor Harbor Island 8:17 p.m.
Upper harbor PCH Bridge 8:24 p.m.
Mariners' Mile Balboa Bay Resort 8:34 p.m.
Mariners' Mile Newport Boy Scout Sea Base 8:37 p.m.
Lido Lido Marina Village 8:50 p.m.
Lido Lido Park / Lido Bridge 8:55 p.m.
Lido Isle Tip of Lido Isle, finish 9:00 to 9:30 p.m.

These are estimates, and the sources don't fully agree. On its Marina Park page, the organizer has the parade reaching the park at 6:45 p.m., four minutes earlier than the cruise schedule. The organizer's own FAQ puts the end at around 9 p.m. and tells viewers to arrive early.

The table shows a two-hour gap between the parade's first public viewing spot and its last. Marina Park sees the lead boat before 7. Lido Marina Village, at the far end of the loop, waits until nearly 9. A family with young children at Marina Park and a dinner reservation in Lido Marina Village are watching the same parade, roughly two hours apart. The 13 minutes between Davey's Locker at 7:16 and Peninsula Point Beach at 7:29 is the longest stretch between points in the first half of the route, and it's the boats running out to the harbor entrance.

Balboa Island sees the parade twice in 27 minutes

The Balboa Island Bridge is the only point on the route listed twice, at 7:43 and again at 8:10 p.m. Between those two passes, the boats circle the island. The schedule has them at Little Island Point at 7:49, the Ferry Landing at 7:58, Collins Island at 8:00 and the Bayfront at 8:05.

Someone standing at the bridge sees the lead boats head out and then come back half an hour later. Someone on the Bayfront gets a later pass that falls between the two. Balboa Island is one of the public shore-viewing areas listed by Visit Newport Beach, along with Edgewater Place, Marina Park, the Balboa Fun Zone, China Cove Beach, Lookout Point, West Jetty View Park and Via Lido Park.

Fireworks and drone shows are timed around the boats

The extras follow their own schedule, and it overlaps the loop on purpose. On opening night, Wednesday, December 16, fireworks go off the Newport Pier at about 6:15 p.m., roughly 15 minutes before the first boat leaves Lido. Marina Park is free that night and holds a market from 4 to 8 p.m.

Every parade night also has two drone show sites, one at each end of the harbor. The organizer lists these times:

  • Balboa Bay Club: 6:00 and 8:15 p.m. on December 16, then 6:15 and 8:15 p.m. on December 17 through 20
  • Peninsula Park, near the Fun Zone: 6:45 and 8:00 p.m. every night

Put those next to the route table and some good pairings appear. At Balboa Bay Resort, the 8:15 drone show ends about 20 minutes before the boats arrive at 8:34, so one spot gets two shows. The Peninsula Park shows at 6:45 and 8:00 come before and after the central harbor's 7:14 to 7:16 pass of the Newport Landing and Davey's Locker docks. If you're on the peninsula side, you can plan your timing around those two windows.

The waterfront is judged before the first boat leaves

The decorated homes along the harbor follow a different calendar. The Ring of Lights contest is open to "all homes, businesses, and yacht clubs lining the harbor." The organizer says it "has become as celebrated as the boat parade itself," and entrants may appear in the live broadcast. Entry costs $35, and the registration page sets the deadline at noon on Friday, December 11, 2026. Judging is Monday, December 14, and entrants are asked to have their decorations up by then.

The judging happens two nights before the parade starts. For anyone who lives on the water, decorating day comes well before opening night. Past results show which parts of the harbor take part. The organizer's 2024 winners list includes addresses on Harbor Island, Linda Isle, Via Lido, Bayside Drive, Bay Front and the Balboa Peninsula. That list covers 2024 only. The 2026 entrants won't be known until registration closes.

The cruise schedules also show the harbor's lit season starting weeks before the parade. Newport Landing runs holiday-light cruises at 5:30, 7:00 and 8:30 p.m. from November 27 to December 15 and again from December 21 to January 1. Parade nights get their own sailings: 5:30 to 6:50, 7:05 to 8:15 and 8:30 to 9:50 p.m. Davey's Locker describes a cruise of about 75 minutes, starting at $39, running nightly from November 28 to January 1. The joint route schedule page shows departures through January 2, so confirm the last sailing with the operator before booking.

The full calendar runs from late November into January

Since the parade is the five-night peak of a longer season, here is the whole sequence in order. For readers on November 5, it starts a little over two weeks out.

  1. Monday, November 23: Santa's Garden opens its fresh-cut tree lot at Newport Dunes.
  2. Friday, November 27: Newport Dunes begins its 36th annual Lighting of the Bay, with more than 50 lit decorations and trees floating on the bay nightly from dusk through January 3. The Fire & Lights Festival at 1131 Back Bay Drive opens the same night and runs Thursday through Sunday evenings. It's closed December 24, December 25 and December 31. Wild Fire Arts Collective performs fire dancing on Friday and Saturday nights. Entry is free. Parking, inflatables and concessions cost extra.
  3. Sunday, November 29: Balboa Bay Resort holds its tree lighting from 5 to 10 p.m. at 1221 Coast Highway.
  4. December 4 to 6: Merry & Bright Lights opens at Sherman Library & Gardens, 2647 E. Coast Highway in Corona del Mar. Entry is timed at 5 or 7 p.m. Tickets are $45 for members and $65 for nonmembers, according to Stu News Newport. It returns December 10 to 13 and December 17 to 22.
  5. Sunday, December 6: The 47th Annual Corona del Mar Christmas Walk runs along PCH through Corona del Mar Village from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's free, and it falls on the same weekend as Sherman's opening nights a short distance away.
  6. Sunday, December 13: The Balboa Island Improvement Association's 28th annual Holiday Home Walking Tour opens six decorated homes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $50, rain or shine.
  7. Monday, December 14: Ring of Lights judging.
  8. December 16 to 20: The parade, with opening-night fireworks on the 16th and drone shows every night.

Two overlaps call for a choice. Sherman's December 17 to 20 nights fall on parade nights, and its 7 p.m. entry lands right in the middle of the parade's loop. The Dunes festival's Thursday-to-Sunday schedule also overlaps four of the five parade nights. Its floating lights glow nightly through January 3, though, so it's the easiest of the season's displays to save for a quieter evening.

Parking guidance differs by source

The organizer's directions and parking page says City lots will be open, street parking along the route is available, and lots fill quickly. Visit Newport Beach says the Marina Park lot will be closed to the public on opening night. Marina Park normally has 177 spaces on its 10.5 acres, and it is the biggest public viewing area on the route. If you're counting on that lot for December 16, check its status that day before you leave. On the other four nights, the route table matters more. The farther your spot is from the 6:30 start, the more time you have to get there.
